HISTORICAL ADVENTURE #1:

glyphSTOLEN PEACE:

THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE SPANISH CONQUEST

2 boys

(a story of the devastation of the Tainos on Hispaniola)

A BOOK THAT TEACHES HISTORY WITH A MESSAGE
"This year, with this book, I hit gold: the students LOVED it and really learned from it. It brought this part of the course to life as has never happened before.
"_Sons of Yocahu_(which is now named "Stolen Peace") is an extremely engaging, powerful and painful novel, and, as far as I know, there is no other novel about the early encounter between the Spanish and the Tainos in English. I think the book has a lot of potential as a secondary school history book (which would totally transform the teaching of Caribbean history in the Anglophone Caribbean)."
— Melanie Newton, Associate Professor, History Department, University of Toronto

THE TRAGEDY OF THE TAINOS

"First of all, thumbs up to Gloria Bond for writing the only historical novel I can find on the subject of the Tainos and the destruction the Spanish inflicted upon them. Her research is amazing and her characters really come alive.

"Beautiful story and very well told."
—Tara

AN IDEAL SOCIETY TRASHED

When the Spanish arrived in the Caribbean in 1492, they left destruction in their wake. But no people were as devastated as the Taino Indians. Even the name of the island where they made their home — Quisqueya — was stolen, and called Hispaniola. In the wake of the Spanish Conquest, the Taino people struggled not for survival, but simply to be remembered. Their histories, their chants, and their gods were almost entirely wiped away. Until now.

This is the untold story of the devastation wrought by the Spanish Conquest on the island of Quisqueya. It is the story of a people who cry out for remembrance more than 500 years later. It is the story of a few brave people who dared to stand up against a powerful empire that was dedicated to their annihilation. Stolen Peace combines fictional and historical characters from both the Spanish conquerors and Taino cultures to give insight into those forces that decimated a culture in a single generation.

Note: This book was written—not only to tell a fictional story about what happened to the Tainos on the island of Hispaniola—but more important, it serves as a symbol of the painful tragedy that befell ALL native Americans.

ENTERTAINING, WELL WRITTEN STORY THAT MAY ALSO TEACH YOU SOMETHING

"This is one of my favorite all time books. As a lover of historical fiction and non -fiction I could not have been more pleased with this story. This book however is not just for history fans. It's a story of a beautiful, honest people that are destroyed by European imperialism.

glyphSTOLEN FAITH: A SAGA OF CULTURES IN CONFLICT

a story of the growth of the three religions in Spain from 1000 BC

A STARK REALITY WITHIN A PAMPERED WORLD

Five-year-old Joaquin isn't supposed to know anything about the world outside the protected environment where he has been reared. His mother is determined to insulate him from the clashes that took his father's life. But then his father's adoptive parent [note: ADOPTIVE parent, not an ADOPTED parent], Abdullah, enters his life. Joaquin later learns that his brilliant geography and history tutor, Señor De Guzman, is a converso; many conversos were Jews who were forcibly converted to Christianity. Joaquin discovers that the world he lives in is unsafe for anyone who is different.

As time passes, Joaquin finds himself caught between faiths—the very fate that his mother feared, because the Inquisition does not tolerate dissension.

Set in Spain starting at 1505 and continues as Joaquin matures, STOLEN FAITH is the sequel to STOLEN PEACE .

CAPTURE HISTORICAL COMPLEXITY IN A BEACHREAD

"Gloria Bond's second in her trilogy, Stolen Faith covers centuries of Spanish cultural and religious religious waves. Her research and religious sensitivities shine in snap shots that depict family, fate and a religious heritage throughout time. The ambitious goal of covering so migratory means each snap shot is brief, but it sheds light on periods of history not covered in many people's education. I am generally a nonfiction book reader, but the mixture of history and story was a heartbeat read. I haven't read first book, Stolen Peace, but my curiosity how these tie together means I'll download that soon."

TRUE STORY #1

glyphVOICES: FROM THE FUTURE OF CHINA

AN EMERGING WORLD WE OUGHT TO KNOW

When I first arrived in China to teach at Nanjing University of Technology, I thought I knew all about its culture, for I had read books about it. I had also helped someone, who had grown up in China, write her memoirs. However, after only a few weeks of teaching English majors, as I read their essays, it became evident that I had never known the Chinese people, at all, and I was in for many surprises. For one thing, China is comprised of many ethnic groups, but there’s more to this situation.

My students talked about the days of their grandparents, as "Old China," and referred to that period as being a feudalistic that was characterized by suppressed and unhappy women. These students call their present culture "New China, "which is known to be a vibrant and rapidly changing world, filled with state-of-the-art technologies and women who are becoming liberated. I've learned that when China underwent great cultural and political reform in the 1960s, so did its people. Within the new China, I've met both gracious and kind people, as well as strong-minded and even rude, catty ones. Even family members do not have the close relationships, I had thought most Chinese families had, for fathers take jobs that are miles away from home and often live apart from their wives and children. I was surprised, too, when I often did not find the obedient, well-behaved people that I've heard so much about.

Further, before I came to China, I was told that the Chinese culture was not a romantic one, for traditionally, couples were matched up by either their parents or paid matchmakers, so they did not know anything about romantic love. Little did I know that China has moved away from this situation, and I’ve found that today, the Chinese are among the most romantically-minded people I've ever met.

It did not take long to realize that, like me, the West also does not understand much about today’s China. We hear straight news and financial reports about its current events, but these bits and pieces do not bring the real China to us. Thus, I’ve asked my students to share their stories with me, so they can help the West learn more about them. Within the pages of Voices: From the Future of China, I bring glimpses of some of the surprises I've faced during my two years in Nanjing.

A PRESCHOOLERS' ADVENTURE WITH COLORS

glyphSTUPENDOUS COLORS (in five languages)

WHAT'S DEVELOPMENTAL READINESS?

Do babies and preschoolers need to be developmentally ready to know colors? We of the STUPENDOUS COLORS team wonder about this, after a five-months-old infant could differentiate three colors with our approach. Preschoolers in our group learned 15 colors quickly, often before they reached two years old. This method was also applied to 350 preschoolers with good results.

STUPENDOUS COLORS is now available in different languages and will soon be out in digital form. It's a no-sweat, straight-forward approach that appeals to toddlers and makes learning 15 colors easy, so they can never be forgotten. With these books available in different languages, parents can now teach their children colors in English, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese from the day they're born!

EXCELLENT TOOL FOR LEARNING QUICKLY

"My daughter learned all of her colors in just two days with this method! She even recognized the words that stood for each of them. After struggling for weeks with M & Ms, putting colorful objects in our environment, and experimenting with electronic gadgets, I can't believe how its simplicity and straightforwardness could be so effective.
"Since beginning with the book, I have successfully taught this method to two different children with very different learning styles. It strikes at the baseline where most children learn best.

"Kudos to this author for making learning not only fun, but quick.
"
Tracey , Pediatric RN, BSN, and Homeschooling Parent

AMAZING RESULTS

"People are amazed when they see how many colors Andie knows, because she's just a year and a half. They're especially impressed that she knows chartrueuse, because it's not easy to learn."

A PRESCHOOLERS' ADVENTURE WITH READING

glyph60 WORDS PRESCHOOLERS CAN READ

WANT TO SEE HOW FAST YOUR PRESCHOOLER CAN LEARN TO READ?

Nowhere else in the world will you find a method like this one! The reason why it's so effective, is that it was created from a "little kid" level.

We adults believe we know all about how preschoolers thinkthrough reading, observation and study. Unfortunately, most of us can't even remember back when we were one or two years old, so we can't accurately relate to their world. Because we don't, we often miss the amazing potential they have packed in their brains. We also can't remember the intense desire to learn we once had at this age, which still exist among our own preschoolers.
